Penalties

101 Penalties

101 has a detailed penalty system. Mistakes cost points, and some can change the course of the entire game. Here is every penalty rule.

Wrong Opening

If a player declares an opening but their pers do not meet the required threshold (101 points or enough pairs), they receive 101 penalty points. Their tiles are returned to their rack and play continues normally with them discarding a tile.

Discarding Okey

Discarding an okey tile gives 101 penalty points. The next player cannot take it from the discard.

Opening by Taking a Discard

If a player opens their hand by taking a discarded tile instead of drawing from the pile, they receive a penalty equal to the tile's face value multiplied by 10. If opening with doubles by taking a discard, the penalty is the tile's value multiplied by 20.

Failing to Commit

If a player discards a tile that could have been committed to an existing per on the table, they receive 101 penalty points. This applies whether they have opened their hand or not.

Someone Else's Okey Gets Retrieved

If another player retrieves an okey tile from a per you opened (by completing the set with all 4 colors), you receive 101 penalty points.

End-of-Round Penalties (When Someone Finishes)

When a player finishes the round by emptying their rack, all other players receive penalties based on their situation:

  • Players who did not open: 202 penalty points.
  • Players who opened: penalty equal to the total of their remaining tile values.
  • Players going for doubles: double the total of their remaining tile values.
  • Finisher discards okey or finishes with doubles: all others get 404 penalty points.
  • Finisher opens with doubles and finishes with okey: all others get 808 penalty points.
