Okey Tips & Strategy

Whether you are just starting out or looking to sharpen your game, these tips will help you make better decisions at the table.

Watch the Indicator

The indicator is the face-up tile that determines the okey for each round. Before you do anything else, make sure you know what the okey is. If you hold okey tiles, remember they can substitute for anything, so plan your pers around them.

Also pay attention to what the indicator tile itself is. Since that tile is out of play, it slightly reduces the chances of forming pers that would need it.

Pay Attention to Discards

What other players throw away tells you a lot about what they do not need. If you see many tiles of one color being discarded, runs in that color become harder to complete because fewer tiles remain in the pile.

On the flip side, if a number keeps showing up in different colors, building a set of that number becomes less likely. Use discards to adjust your strategy as the round goes on.

Keep Your Options Open Early

In the first few turns, avoid locking into one strategy. Hold tiles that could work in multiple pers. A tile like blue 7 might fit into a run (6-7-8) or a set (red 7, blue 7, black 7), so keep it around until you have a clearer picture.

Flexibility early on gives you more paths to finish. As the round progresses and you draw more tiles, the right direction usually becomes obvious.

Know When to Go for Doubles

Going for doubles (7 pairs of identical tiles) can be tempting because of the higher score, but it is risky. You need exactly 7 pairs, and you cannot mix pairs with pers.

If you have 4 or 5 natural pairs early in the round, it might be worth pursuing. Otherwise, stick to pers. Switching from doubles back to pers mid-round wastes turns and leaves you behind.

Use Okey Tiles Wisely

Okey tiles are the most valuable tiles in the game because they substitute for anything. Try to save them for pers that are hard to complete naturally. If you already have a near-complete run like yellow 3-4, an okey can fill in as the 5 and close it out.

Avoid using okey tiles where a regular tile would do just fine. You want maximum flexibility from them.

Do Not Hold Onto Dead Tiles

If a tile has no realistic chance of fitting into a per, discard it early. Holding dead tiles slows you down because every turn spent not improving your hand is a turn wasted.

Check the discards. If both copies of a tile you need are already gone, that per is dead. Let go of the remaining pieces and focus on what is still possible.

Think About the 12-13-1 Wrap

Remember that 12-13-1 is a valid run in okey. This gives you an extra option at the high end of the number range that new players often overlook. If you are holding a 12 and 13 in the same color, a 1 in that color completes the run.

Keep in mind that the wrap does not extend further. 12-13-1-2 is not valid, so 1 can only connect to the end of 12-13, not continue the sequence.
